Best Buy's earnings tank big time

The economy is hitting everyone hard and that includes Best Buy. Best Buy reported on Tuesday its earnings for the third quarter dropped by 77% over the same quarter last year.
Best Buy CEO Brad Anderson has announced that Best Buy will be offering voluntary buyouts to all of its employees. If a sufficient number of buyouts are not taken, they will have to start layoffs. In addition to cutting back on employess Best Buy will cut expenditures in half and delay new store openings.

Google releases Android Dev Phone 1 for developers

Google has quietly revealed a new Android phone. This time, the Android Dev Phone 1 is designed to be sold exclusively to hard working developers. The Android Dev Phone 1 is a SIM- and hardware-unlocked G1 phone.
The Dev Phone 1 includes a system image that's fully compatible with Android 1.0. It complies with any SIM card and can "flash custom Android builds that will work with the unlocked bootloader."

Opera Mini 4.2 beta is the first third-party browser for Android. Although it's just a beta version it looks pretty good. Cnet took the new browser through its paces and it came out pretty well. They did have a problem getting the video playback feature to work but that will surely be worked out by the time it comes out of beta.

NitroDesk has released TouchDown, "the world's first on-the-phone solution for accessing your Exchange Server email, contacts and calendar on Android-powered handsets."

American Airlines testing out mobile electronic boarding pass

American Airlines is trying to make flying a little easier for the holidays. The company is trying a new way of electronically distributing boarding passes on traveler's phones.
The service is available now for passengers departing on domestic flights from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Passengers will be able to use these two-dimensional barcode boarding passes instead of the normal paper boarding pass. Adobe has confirmed that Flash is coming to Google's Android OS. The companies today revealed that that Adobe has made its Flash technology compatible with the Android. This is good news for T-Mobile's G1 as it may get a software enhancement that Apple's iPhone is yet to acquire.

Tethering app coming to Android

T-Mobile G1 users have a bit of news to celebrate. A tethering application is coming to the Android OS. Brighthand is reporting that a representative from PDANet developer June Fabrics has signaled a tethering application is on the way for Android.
As a company spokesperson told Brighthand, "we do not support G1 currently. However, we do plan to support it in the future."

AT&T has no plans for Android-powered phones

First Sprint said Google's Android OS was not good enough to be on their network, and now it seems that AT&T has similar sentiments. The San Fransisco Chronicle is reporting that AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega says that AT&T has been looking into Android, but has no plans of offering an Android-powered handset at this time. AT&T apparently feels that Android needs to offer more non-Google applications.

It was just a matter of time before someone decided to rip the T-Mobile G1 apart. The folks at Tech On opened up the first Android phone and made some surprising finds.
First of all, the trackball module used on the G1 is the same part that BlackBerry uses in their devices. They also found 2 vibrator motors in the G1.
